Nurturing a love for reading in 2025

The Vunilagi Book Club continues to grow as a 100% volunteer-led initiative, powered by passionate individuals across four communities — Nanuku, Dilkusha Home, St. Christopher Home, and our newest chapter in Beqa Island. Each week, we create safe, joyful spaces for children aged 6 to 13 to explore the magic of books, strengthen their language skills, and discover the joy of learning.

A unique strength of our program lies in our community loop — former participants, now senior readers and young leaders, return to support younger children. In Nanuku, for example, senior girls set up sessions, guide small reading groups, and help younger children in their vernacular languages. This leadership model is now being nurtured across all communities.

Vunilagi Bookclub Important Dates 2025

Each community is supported by a dedicated Community Manager and volunteer group, ensuring our programs are tailored, consistent, and meaningful.

We invite volunteers to sign up for a specific community and commit to supporting it throughout the calendar year. This focused approach allows you to build lasting relationships and make a deeper impact.

Our volunteers participate in:

  • Weekly Reading Sessions
  • Community Events & Outings
  • Program Development Initiatives
  • Data stewardship to track and improve our impact

Recent program highlights (July 2025):

  • Nanuku: Weekly reading sessions continue in partnership with YWAM, with senior girls taking on leadership roles in supporting younger readers. Age-appropriate novels have been introduced for older girls alongside our foundational children’s collection.

  • Dilkusha Home: Plans are underway to introduce a tutoring program next term, following a successful pilot at Nanuku. Data collection will be strengthened to better track attendance and literacy progress.

  • St. Christopher Home: A new calendar of reading sessions is being rolled out, with outings like museum visits planned for later this year.

  • Beqa Island: Fortnightly reading sessions have begun, led by local teachers and mothers. The program will be formally introduced to the Bose Va Koro in August 2025, with an official Vunilagi visit planned for September 2025.

Beyond the reading mat:

  • We’re trialing a rotating book model with YWAM Nadi to extend our reach without overextending our collection.

  • Fundraising is underway to improve Nanuku’s reading space — AUD $1,310 of our $5,000 target has been raised so far.

  • Partnerships are being explored with Habitat for Humanity, Fiji Airways, and local schools to improve facilities, transport books, and expand tutoring support.

  • Storage and book curation remain key priorities, with new solutions now in place in Nadera and plans for a senior reader novel rotation.

Whether you can give your time weekly, monthly, or on a project basis, your enthusiasm and commitment help us create safe, inspiring spaces where children can grow through the power of reading.
